A message from our Patron in Norway
Copy of a message from our Patron to our Secretary from Ralf Campbell:
Good afternoon from Norway,
Thank you for keeping me updated on events in the English Elkhound world. I have studied the AGM Agenda with great interest and look forward to reading the minutes and the result of the SGM in April.
Money is frequently the main issue at the NEKF (Norske Elghundklubbers Forbund) General Meetings as well as the 23 regional clubs. The latter have on the whole a sound economy but the cost of the club journal, «Elghunden» (70-80 pages) is high and the postage is killing. It is published three times annually and contains reports on the approximately 40 shows (all CC) in addition articles of general interest. Several regional clubs voted for digital issues of the club journal at their AGM in February.
One of them was Nord-Hålogaland Elghundklubb, one of the smallest but still one of the most active NEKF clubs. I judged at their show in Narvik three weeks ago, and in the evening I had the privilege of attending their AGM. The reason was that the board had asked me to give a lecture on the history of «show business» in the Elkhound ring after the formalities were over. The discussion about whether «Elghunden» should go digital or not revealed that the total sum of membership fees, in addition to the surplus of their annual show (50-70 entries), 8-10 loose dog trials, 2-3 leash dog trials, 18-20 tracking trials and 13-15 fresh track trials can barely cover the expenses of the club. If there is a majority for the proposal of «Elghunden» going digital at NEKF`s AGM (meeting of representatives) in April the paper issue will be history from 2026. In that case I will miss it, but the majority rules.
Regards Ralf
PS
At the first Elkhound show in 1877 the breed was called "Bjørn- og Elghund», and 150 years later the Elkhound/ Elghund is still used for hunting bear (bjørn).
NECGB Magazine 2024
The Club publishes a Journal, which is an important record of all the breed registrations, show wins and health testing done over the year, and a chance for owners and enthusiasts to advertise their kennels and dogs.
A more informal Magazine is also published annually. For the first time ever, the Magazine has been published in digital format and we are sharing a copy with you here (just click on the image).
Why not join the Club and ensure that you receive all future copies of both publications?

My Summary on the Preshow discussion – Jill E Cowper
Presentation/Handling/Etiquette
This was very poorly attended regardless of the publicity it was given prior to the show.
On watching the judging during the day, I thought presentation and handling of some of the exhibits was not good, and a large percentage of the exhibitors would benefit from a few of the tips below.
These are just a few points we went through on preparation for the show ring;
PRESENTATION
It is important to check the following before exhibiting any dog at a show,
-
Make sure your dog is in a fit and healthy condition, eyes and ears must be clean, teeth should be clean and full dentition present.
-
Make sure your dog is bodily clean and well groomed. Nails short.
-
Practice your show ring training before you enter your class.
-
Your personal presentation should also be clean and tidy and well groomed.
-
You should always portray a pleasant and happy disposition along with your dog.
HANDLING
-
Always practice your movement at home or try to attend a Training Club/Ring Craft classes.
-
Choose and use the correct show collar and lead which suits both your dog and yourself, keep this only for showing.
-
It does not look professional to use your knee or leg to move the position of your dog.
-
Always use your body weight and balance to move him/her around, or even your hand.
-
Always keep your eye on the judge, they are still looking and comparing.
-
Don’t have your lead tight or your dog too close. You are showing your dog off to the judge, not doing obedience. Let him see the dog, not your legs.
-
If moving in a circle, triangle or asked to do a return run, always change hands so that the judge sees the dog and not your legs.
ETIQUETTE
-
Always be polite to the Judge and the Stewards.
-
Good Morning or Good Afternoon are acceptable, do not try and have a conversation unless you are spoken to.
-
Never scold your dog in the ring, or pull him/her around, this is not acceptable in public view.
-
Always give yourself plenty of room to show your dog, if you feel squashed up, then you may move to an open space.
-
Never run up the back of the dog in front of you, if the class is running together. Give yourself plenty of room before setting off.
-
Always thank the Stewards and the Judge if you’re placed or not. You may not always agree with their decision, accept it, be a good sport, there’s always another show.
