Champion Bitch & Overall Winner 2017, Cowpers' Ch Rothenborg Leaha
I was delighted to accept the invitation to judge The 2017 Annual Contest Of Champions for the NECGB, from Margaret Deuchar who along with daughter Debbie has the event so well staged and managed.
The event was held at the Best Western Hall Hotel, Bulkington, Coventry. It proved to be an ideal venue, spacious light and airy, it accommodated the event very well. There were 25 Elkhounds entered to compete in the various categories, many thanks to all exhibitors for allowing me the privilege of assessing your lovely hounds.

Champion of Champions Challenge
BB & Champion of the Year. Cowper. CH. ROTHENBORG LEAHA. Pleased to see this lovely bitch here today a firm favourite of mine, having awarded her CC & BOB at Bath Ch Show 2015, now rising 7yrs she looks as good as ever, a neat and shapely bitch, in excellent form, up on her toes with alert attitude and excellent carriage, yes she would look even better with a darker mask, even so she is attractive in head with good blunt wedge, correct planes, oval dark expressive eyes, of a lovely make and shape, good bone/feet and pasterns, abundant clear coat, tightly curled tail set on high, really scores in her movement which is so effortless, attributed to her balanced moderate angulation in both fore and hindquarters, excellent forehand with good return of upperarm placing her elbows under her withers, pleased to see that she has passed on her qualities to her offspring.
BD Cowper. CH ROTHENBORG OLAV. Now 3 yrs this mature stallion hound was my BP @ Bath Ch Show 2015. I see from the catalogue that he is the sire of the Best Puppy today. Holds a lovely shape, of good proportions, square in outline, short backed, enough length of leg, moderate angulation and with good forehand construction, tail is high set with double curled, good bone and neat oval shaped feet, has a handsome blunt wedge shaped head with correct planes and dark mask, has well set and carried ears, well presented coat with defined harness markings and clear grey colour, gaited freely and soundly.
27th March 2017
It was a great honour to be invited to judge the 21st Contest of the NECGB. It seems a long time since Nicola Croxford & I organised the first one, where the late Terry Thorn & Zena were the judges. I am grateful to the organisers, Margaret & Debbie Deuchar plus everyone else who assisted & especially Janice for the fantastic rosettes.
This is my 39th year in Elkhounds & they are a most amazing breed. One of the great characteristics is the temperament & the Standard it calls for “friendly, intelligent & independent without any sign of nervousness”; & as a breed specialist I adore puppies or adults to seek attention from the judge & want to have a fuss rather than be gone over!
A lovely entry awaited me & thanks to all exhibitors. There were some tough decisions in some of the rounds.
BPD & overall Puppy Challenge winner 2016, Gilluley & Tress’ Grasilva Little Rock avec Gilkaro, 22 months on the day. A well made & confident junior now. Lovely “apple pie” proportioned wedge head & kind expression. Dark & very mobile ears of correct size & proportions. Good forequarters, good proportions in leg length & short in couplings. Lovely steel silver colour & tight, well set tail. Good angulation & moved with good drive, retaining his topline on the move.
BPB, Gray’s Grasilva Silver Vine, litter sister to winner. Attractive puppy with a sweet head & expression. Dark eye of correct shape. She presents a compact outline with, like her litter brother, good length of leg to body ratio. Good tailset & feminine throughout. Lovely side gait.
BVD & overall winner of Veteran of the Year, Haugstad’s Ch Kestos Night Cap at Skogley, 9 years of age. Fine upstanding male presenting a lovely profile picture. Quality wedge shaped head, very mobile ears, strong forequarters & short in couplings. A very typical & appealing expression & this is, for me, the head shape & expression called for in the Standard. He epitomises so much of our breed & especially in cobbiness & shape. A very worthy Ch & a credit to his owner & breeders. He was also entered in the Ch knockout & between the veteran & ultimate winner was probably the closest decision on the day.
BVB, Allchin’s Carolon Puttin’ On The Ritz, 12 years real poppet. Again, a great credit to her owner/breeder, she has a very sweet expression & lovely neckline, coupled with pure silver colour. Moved well for her age.
BB & Overall winner of the Stud Book Challenge 2016, Allchin’s Laakso Kia’s Cracker of Carolon, very tidy girl all round – good proportions & lovely neckline. Super feminine head, expression & overall type, ears well set & carried, good pigmentation, compact & balanced. Tail a little lazy at times. Good on the move & nice reach in profile action.
BD, G Little Rock avec G.
Contest of Champions 2016, it isn’t often one gets 10 Ch Elkhounds in a single knockout – a great pleasure to go over them. Thank you. Best Champion Dog & Overall winner 2016, Simms’ Ch Bowerhinton Broder at Elverdal, this dog probably looked today the best I have ever seen him. I previously judged him when he was a youngster & I awarded him a CC & BOB then. Today he had a zest for life & never put a foot wrong. As previously mentioned, he was pressed hard by the veteran winner but today was his. I was looking for balance & moderation in all aspects of the breed, square yet not losing front construction as a result & with unexaggerated angles. He ticked all the boxes & more. A soft expression & great nature. He has a classic outline which is so akin to that of the Julia Rands line drawing we historically recognise as our blueprint. Moved soundly & with purpose, decent reach on strong well made legs.
Best Champion Bitch, Middleton’s Ch Graythor Norwegian Lights, 3 years of age. Very honest bitch with a frank, fearless & kind expression. Lovely overall shape, feminine head of good wedge shape. Good level topline & decent couplings. Dark eyes & well placed ears. Decent colour & good proportions. Moved with drive.
Note from Editor: It would be lovely to have to photos of these winners to put on here. If you would like to be included please send a photograph to me here:
